All week long, longtime viewers have been sharing their reasons for watching. “I enjoy that there seems to be an honest discourse without interrupting, rudeness or arguing,” Kathleen told us in Colorado.

For 50 years, Washington Week has been the most intelligent and up to date conversation about the most important news stories of the week. “I just love hearing smart people talk about the current issues of the week,” longtime viewer Kim told us at the roadshow in Philadelphia last summer.

As Washington Week celebrates its 50th anniversary, longtime viewers are telling us why they love the show. One thing we keep hearing: “It's very measured and objective in this day and age of the shouting and partisan bickering.” Gwen Ifill always said she wanted to offer viewers more light than heat. That remains our goal every week.

As Washington Week marks its 50th anniversary, two of the program’s original employees are nearing their own golden anniversary. Paul Anthony, Washington Week’s announcer for the past 50 years, met his wife Joanne, a one-time Washington Week production assistant and WETA-TV accountant, on his first day on the job. “It was love at first sight,” Paul says.

Kathy told us she watches because of the intelligent, responsible and respectful conversations. “I like the fact that it's done intelligently, and people don't yell each other down,” she said in line for the Washington Week roadshow in Cleveland last July.

America had a new Republican president, as well as a Republican-controlled Congress. It was 2001, and George W. Bush had just taken office as the 43rd president of the United States. Bush, much like President Donald Trump this week, kicked off his first term by making good on campaign promises, such as education reform and conservative values on issues like abortion.

During his first week in office President Donald Trump has been busy fulfilling many of his campaign promises by signing executive orders to build a wall on the southern border, begin undoing the Affordable Care Act and moving forward on the Keystone XL pipeline. Eight years ago, President Obama was also trying to jump start his agenda.
