They decide to send the Remotely Operated Vehicle to get a closer look, but run into a potentially mission ending mechanical issue in the process.

The attack on the USS Indianapolis was a deadly one – more than 300 of the nearly 1,200 men on board went down with the ship. Many of the 900 survivors are wounded, surrounded by a toxic oil spill, and harassed by sharks. Only 316 survive five days adrift on the Pacific before they are finally rescued.

High Tech Search Tools to Find the USS Indianapolis

The USS Indianapolis sank in the deepest ocean on the planet. To have any chance of finding the wreck, the R/V Petrel will need to use two pieces of state of the art technology to search those crushing depths – an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle will survey the seabed floor, and a Remotely Operated Vehicle equipped with a high definition camera will inspect objects identified by the AUV.
