A concert with folk music legend Joan Baez and others, celebrating her birthday at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Baez is joined on stage by stars including David Bromberg, Jackson Browne, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Judy Collins, David Crosby, Emmylou Harris, Indigo Girls, Damien Rice, Paul Simon, Mavis Staples, Nano Stern, and Richard Thompson.

Artist William Kentridge directs Alban Berg’s opera Lulu, starring German soprano Marlis Petersen as the irresistible femme fatale. One of the most important and notorious stage works of the 20th century, Lulu is the drama of a young woman who sexually and emotionally dominates a wide range of willing victims, both male and female. Welsh National Opera music director Lothar Koenigs conducts.

Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser comes to Great Performances at the Met for the first time and is conducted by James Levine. The Otto Schenk production gets its first Met revival in more than a decade. Johan Botha makes his Met role debut in the titular role; Eva-Maria Westbroek is Elisabeth; Michelle DeYoung is the goddess Venus; Peter Mattei is Wolfram; and Günther Groissböck is the Landgraf.

Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher’s acclaimed new Met Opera production is led by conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin with Aleksandrs Antonenko in his first Met performance as Otello, the tormented Moor of Venice, with Sonya Yoncheva in her role debut as his innocent wife, Desdemona. Željko Lu?i? is Otello’s sinister rival, Iago. Great Performances at the Met is now in its 10th season.

Soprano Anna Netrebko appears in her highly anticipated Met role debut as Leonora, the tortured heroine who sacrifices her own life for the love of the Gypsy troubadour in Verdi's opera, Il Trovatore. Netrebko sings Leonora's aria from Act IV --- "D'amor sull'ali rosee" --- at the final dress rehearsal for the Met Opera's Il Trovatore.

The Prater grounds were once the hunting grounds of the Habsburg royalty before Emperor Joseph II opened it to the public in 1766. Julie Andrews hosts the annual New Year’s Day celebration with the Vienna Philharmonic from Vienna’s Musikverein, a beloved annual tradition. Maestro Mariss Jansons will conduct the popular concert of melodies by the Strauss Family and their contemporaries. The the Vienna Boys’ Choir and soloists of the Vienna State Ballet also perform. Andrea Bocelli performs "Sorridi Amore Vai" from the film Life is Beautiful (1997), accompanied by The Adderley School for the Performing Arts Children’s Choir. The film was directed by and starred Roberto Benigni and won Academy Awards for Best Music, Original Dramatic Score, and Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Actor for Benigni's role.

The star tenor Andrea Bocelli sings "Maria" from the hit Broadway musical and film, West Side Story. Leonard Bernstein composed the music and lyrics are by Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.

Tenor Andrea Bocelli performs the tango song “Por Una Cabeza” from Scent of a Woman (1992). The song, comparing an addiction to horse racing with an attraction to women, was written in 1935 by two men central to tango in Argentina: singer and composer Carlos Gardel and lyricist Alfredo Le Pera. Sharing the stage with Bocelli are tango dancers Paul Karmiryan and Tiffany Maher.

Tenor Andrea Bocelli plays piano and sings “Mi Mancherai” (I'll Miss You) from the film Il Postino (1994). The song's music composer Luis Bacalov won the Best Score Award from Italy’s Nastro d’Argento, the equivalent of the Oscars in that country. The film was directed by Michael Radford and starred Massimo Troisi (1953 – 1994) as the simple mail man who discovers poetry.

Tenor Andrea Bocelli and singer Nicole Scherzinger sing a Spanish-language version of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," a song originally written for the musical Evita by the team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. The film version based on the musical opened on December 25, 1996, and starred Madonna as Evita Perón. Scherzinger began her career with the Pussycat Dolls and starred in Cats in London.

The international superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli lends his unique voice to a lush symphonic salute to the movies, celebrating some of the greatest celluloid songs and scores of all time written by Italian and Hollywood composers. Hollywood luminaries John Travolta, Ryan O’Neal, Ali MacGraw, and Andy Garcia join Bocelli onstage to speak about the films from which the songs derive.
