Preparing for the First Cave Dive

Tafelberg Tepui: Sanctuary for the Vulnerable| Digital Extra
South America’s Guiana Shield is home to a chain of tabletop mountains known locally as Tepuis. Completely isolated from the surrounding forest, their plateau has a cool climate and frequent rainfall, while the jungle below is tropical and humid. Tepuis are renowned for their endemic species. Cut off for millions of years, the flora and fauna that lives here has evolved into entirely new species.

Suriname’s jungles are some of the toughest on the planet and there are constant sobering reminders of previous expeditions that have paid the ultimate price.
An Imitation of the Coral Snake
As night falls, Aldo and Steve join Vanessa, an expert biologist, in search of animals inhabiting the area. They stumble upon a snake with black, yellow and white bands, similar to that of the highly venomous coral snake. As a precaution, the team checks their tents for any animal intruders before heading to bed.
A Stingray Encounter
Local guides and jungle survival experts Jan Willem and Diego Graanoogst join Steve and Aldo on their expedition. As the group prepares their food for the night, they draw predators into camp and encounter a large stingray.
Far From Civilization
Steve and Aldo meet trail cutters who will join them on their trek through the Surniname rainforest. They learn that walking to the closest village could take months, discovering just how far they are from civilization.
Admiring the Suriname River
After a long day of travel on the water, Steve and Aldo take a moment to appreciate the environment around them before sunset.
Modern Day Prospectors
The Expedition team meets with workers supervising an illegal mining operation in Suriname. In order to separate gold from the sediment, the miners use mercury, which is extremely poisonous to the humans and animals that it comes in contact with.
