Call for 2D Student Art and Free Poster Making Workshop
Schack Art Center, in partnership with KCTS 9, is seeking art inspired by the life and activism of Muhammad Ali. This coincides with the release of the new Ken Burns documentary, Muhammad Ali, which premieres on KCTS 9 on September 19, 2021. Entrants will create an original 2D piece of artwork reflecting one of Ali’s 6 core principles and provide a written description (500 words or less) of how the piece represents the principle selected. See below for full contest details. All students are also invited to attend a FREE online workshop with Schack where participants will discover ways to incorporate these themes in their artwork.

7-12 Grade Students
Students are invited to participate in a free poster making workshop to create artwork to submit to the call for art. Students will explore poster making techniques and discover ways to incorporate Muhammad Ali’s 6 core principles into their creative process. Students do not need to attend the workshop to submit artwork, and workshop participants are not required to enter artwork.

Contest Details
Muhammad Ali was a great boxer with a big personality, he was also a passionate activist. He believed in taking an active role in the community and helping to create social change. He lived a life of purpose by following these 6 principles:
SIX CORE PRINCIPLES
Confidence - Belief in oneself, one’s abilities and one’s future.
Conviction - A firm belief that gives one the courage to stand behind that belief, despite pressure to do otherwise.
Dedication - The act of devoting all of one’s energy, effort and abilities to a certain task.
Giving - To present voluntarily without expecting something in return.
Respect - Esteem for, or a sense of the worth or excellence of, oneself and others.
Spirituality - A sense of awe, reverence and inner peace inspired by a connection to all of creation and/or that which is greater than oneself.
Submission Deadline: September 2, 2021
Create an original 2D piece of artwork reflecting one of Ali’s principles and provide a written description (500 words or less) of how the piece represents the principle selected.
Open to 7-12 graders residing in Washington State’s King, Snohomish, Skagit, Island, Whatcom and Kitsap Counties.
Artwork will be juried by a panel of artists, and activist athletes. Chosen artwork will be featured during a KCTS 9 virtual event on September 23 and all submitted artwork will be included in an online gallery. Students whose entries are selected to be featured during the event will receive gift cards for art supplies. The event celebrates the premiere of the Ken Burns documentary Muhammad Ali premiering on KCTS 9 on September 19.
Deadline to submit artwork: September 2, 2021
How to submit artwork
Step 1 - Create an original 2D artwork.
Step 2 - Complete this online entry form by September 2, 2021 midnight - students will upload an image of their artwork in the form and complete a short written statement.
Step 3 - Drop off your artwork at the Schack Art Center 2921 Hoyt Ave, Everett, WA 98201 on September 2 or 4, 10 AM-5 PM. Or mail your artwork to the Schack C/O Raedle Alburn, postmarked by September 3, 2021.
Guidelines and Information for Artwork Entries:
- Students may only submit 2D artwork.
- Students must complete the online entry form by September 2 midnight.
- Artwork must be created by a student 7-12 grade residing in King, Snohomish, Skagit, Island, Whatcom or Kitsap County.
- Entered artwork may be displayed at the Schack Art Center and be part of an online digital gallery.
- Notification of adjudication, September 8, 2021.
